Julia Bullock as Mary

Feature Article: The Met Premiere of John Adams’s El Niño

For my second Met Season Book feature, I wrote about this breathtaking opera-oratorio. I’m very much looking forward to its arrival later this season, especially with this sensational cast and creative team.

Sondra Radvanovsky as Medea

Program Note: Christopher Taylor, Beethoven Transcriptions and Franz Liszt

I loved writing these notes, in part because I wanted to write about this concert beyond the symphonies themselves. Instead, I focused on Liszt’s approach to transcription and how he used his numerous transcriptions to spread music throughout Europe during the nineteenth century.

Program Note: Luca Pisaroni (voice) and Jonathan Ware (piano) at the Mondavi Center

These notes presented a unique challenge for me, especially being an instrumentalist. Through this process, however, I learned a lot about the vocal/lieder repertoire and how to effectively present it to an audience.

Program Note: Rising Stars of Opera at the Mondavi Center

This is one my favorite concerts to perform year after year.

What I found most enjoyable about writing these notes is that with opera, the stories are already so rich. Connecting the music directly to moments within the drama allows the audience to get a glimpse into what full production might feel like.

Mondavi Center Gateway article: “What does it mean to be Royal?” (Royal Scottish National Orchestra)

This was the first project I did for the Mondavi Center at UC Davis. I had not done any work like this in the past, so it pushed my creativity limits. By the end of the job, however, I came to appreciate this kind of storytelling and how it can directly impact the reception of the arts. Click the header above to open the online blog post.
